The purpose of the Emerald Isle Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee is to advocate programs that promote biking and walking and projects which provide safe and convenient facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists in Emerald Isle, including the recommendations of the Highway 58 Corridor Report.

The Emerald Isle Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee shall:
form a visible, vocal and effective coalition of pedestrian and bicycle advocates,
support bicycle and pedestrian friendly legislation,
implement the recommendations of the Highway 58 Report,
develop and implement bicycle and pedestrian safety education programs for vehicle drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians,
advocate for bicycle and pedestrian friendly facilities on roads and throughout Emerald Isle including bicycle lanes and walkways, and
promote livable communities and lifestyles by offering alternatives to automobile dependence.

Powers and Duties of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee
Represent the interests of bicyclists and pedestrians
Provide information to the public about biking and walking including plans, programs and proposed projects
Solicit input and ideas from the public concerning specific proposed projects, and overall bicycle and pedestrian plans and programs
Adopt guidelines for pursuing a safer environment for walking and bicycling in Emerald Isle
Develop and update a bicycle and pedestrian plan for Emerald Isle
Prioritize bicycle and pedestrian facility projects
Apply for grants for bicycle and pedestrian facility projects and programs
Provide detailed design recommendations for new facilities
Provide recommendations for the use and operation of bicycle and pedestrian facilities
Serve as a liaison with livable community advocates and public health agencies.
Advise the Town Manager and Town Board of Commissioners on subjects pertaining to bicyclists and pedestrians in Emerald Isle.
